I read a survey that americans' average salary is $35,000? Is this right?
I would say over all, it sounds about right.

I don't think it is true. It depends on where you live. If you live in California the average salary tends to be higher compared with if you live in Utah or somewhere else with lower standard of living.

According to a recent survey, the salaries of assistant professors have a mean of $40,756 and a standard deviation of $8000. Assuming that the salaries of assistant professors follow a normal distribution, find the proportion of assistant professors who earn more than $50,000. Round your answer to at least four decimal places
According to a recent survey, the salaries of assistant professors have a mean of $40,756 and a standard devia
the general form of a normal distribution,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_dist...
or gaussian distribution is:
(1/(s*sqrt(2*pi))) * exp(-((x-mu)^2)/(2*s*s))
what you are looking for is the integral from x=50k to x=inf
for an answer I got 12.3942%
You can also use a z table for this. To find your z you subtract the mean and divide by the standard deviation.
(50k-40.756k)/8k=1.1555
Try going to this link (http://davidmlane.com/hyperstat/z_table.... and entering 1.1555 into the above entry. You get the same answer displayed: 0.123943, or 12.3943%

Survey: How do you determine what your "Salary Requirements" are when applying for a new job?
You need to know what this number is before you even apply but I don't recommend writing it down anywhere (on their paper or form). I say you need to know because at some point someone will ask you and there becomes an awful silence in the interview when they do.
My advice will be to give a range. A low number is the minimum you will take this job for...which might be the least you would take and still be comfortable living as you do now. You know what you make now so that is a starting point. But don't give this low number out ever.
Next come up with what you think is market value for this job. What do you think the best one who is doing it is getting for your area. Average those two numbers together and make that your low number. You high number is the top end.
Finally, use weasel phrases like "I'm looking at something between X and Y but I usually take benefits into account" ... or ... "I'm looking for something in this range (x-y) but I'm taking into account the position, hours, duties or responsibilities"

Your welcome, my lady. Report Abuse
Reply:ummm...im 15, so i just put open...ill take any job no matter what the salary...but for others, id say your level of desperation, their level of desperation, current salary, level of competition (i.e. how many others there are in your field of work in your area), etc...
Reply:Write "Open", you do not want to short change yourself nor do you want to be passed by because they may not be willing to offer you want "you're expecting". During the interview you can discuss it better.
Good luck on the job hunting!
Reply:At least a 10% raise and a better title is needed, or, if the salary is less than that, there needs to be the possibility of an improved quality of life for the applicant.
Reply:...-When my Landlord is pounding at my door, and shouting, "You've got until the end of the month to pay what you owe -or You're OUT! " ...The "hint" well taken, I bring it with Me when I'm filling out the Job Application... :)
