SURVEY- Would you rather...?

Would you rather...

1) Marry a man who's a doctor and makes great money but is a workaholic. He would not expect you to work. Loves kids. Doesnt drink or smoke and doesnt believe in sex before marriage. You love him but it was the kind of love that developed in time. You were never CRAZY about him he just grew on you and with him being there for you and you being there for him it turned into love.

or...

2) Marry someone who works for a flooring company. Makes a an alright salary but you would definitely have to always work to help pay the bills. Kids are not that important to him and he drinks and smokes alot. He has had alot of sexual partners and is known to get around. You love him more than you have ever thought you could ever love someone. From the moment you saw him you were crazy about him and couldnt stop thinking about him. He is definitely that true love

Thanks!

Please help me with an English Class survey!?
1. What I just read on Wikipedia: After Vietnam was granted independence from France at the Geneva Convention, it was temporarily partitioned into North and South Vietnam. The US feared that communism would spread from North Vietnam to South and then throughout all of Asia and the US (the domino effect). As a result, they put leaders in place in South Vietnam and after failure to hold elections, as ordered by the Geneva conventions, a civil war ensued - which the US had to get involved in, since the gov't continuously agitated the situation. After about 16 years, the US finally had to admit defeat.

2 War should be used as a LAST resort and should never be used in place of diplomacy or used as a means of enforcing colonial power.

3. Yes

4. In a perfect world, it would create stability in the region; but the reality is that it is creating more instability and wreaking havoc.

5. Close friends

6. No, the war in Iraq distracted man power and resources from tracking down terrorists that are still on the loose. Sending the country to war on false pretenses was wrong and unjustifiable.

7. Peace

8. We are not fighting Iraq. We are fighting insurgents in their own country and basically refereeing a civil war which could go on for decades. I hope for the sake of our military that there can be some success, but its doubtful.

9. I'm not sure, but if the supposed goal was to bring democracy then we should work to bring democratic institutions to the region, namely a constitution.

10. I don't think I would because the reasons for declaring war always turn out to be less noble than they seem and wind up being politically motivated.

11. I think it is fair to offer people opportunities that they wouldn't otherwise have, just as long as the military carefully explains the gravity of the decision. When I was in high school, long before this war, military recruiters were permanently stationed at our school and always downplayed the possibility of going to war.
Reply:1 know that it was a no win war,,, we did not know who was good or who was bad

2 sometimes you have to face your enemies

3 no

4 it is the modern vietnam no win situtation

5 no

6 no cause we cant win

7 peace cause it means no one dies

unneccesarily

8 we can win battles not the war it is a no win situation

9 i would give my life if young men and women would not have to die for a cause that is basically about oil

10 if i had to but would not just join

11 it is not fair that young people have to fight at all ,,,, war is started by middle age or older people they should be the one fighting

Atheists, I have a simple survey for you...?

1. How old are you currently, and how old were you when you first decided that you don't believe in god?

2. What is your current occupation, and what is your salary? (Oh, c'mon! It's the Internet. Just tell me :-)

3. What is your favorite movie of all time?

The only reason I'm asking this is because I'm feeling a bit random tonight, and I wanted to get to know my fellow atheists a little better. We're like family here.

Atheists, I have a simple survey for you...?
1.

I am 40 years and 6 months old. I realized that I was an atheist about 5 months ago. It wasn't a decision. It was a realization. I simply lost faith. If there is a God, it must be His will that I did so.

2.

I am a Law Enforcement Officer, and I make about 70,000 to 80,000 a year.

3.

It would be a tie between Pitch Black (with Vin Diesel) and Snatch (Directed by Guy Ritchie).

Welcome to the family, Cuzzz.

El Chistoso
Reply:1. I am 35 now. I decided at 14, but I first realized I had doubts at 8.

2. I am a stay-at-home, homeschooling mother of two kids (ages 15 and 8). My husband is in the military and I am honestly not sure what his salary is. it's enough to pay the bills :p

3. Favorite movie.. that's a tough one. I have many! Can I limit it to 4? All of the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Star Treks (I like movies with sequels lol)
Reply:1. I'm 17, I became an atheist two years ago.

2. Walmart Cashier-$9.30 an hour

3. Pulp Fiction
Reply:Interesting.... and a good reason to ask a question. Star for you.

I think it's about a 50-50 split of religious and non religious here on Y/A, R%26amp;S. I'm an atheist like you.

I'm 60 years old and I've been atheist on an off since I was a little kid. I really decided things at around the age of 25-27.

I retired about ten years ago, (dropped out actually,) and I've enjoyed it more and more each year. Money...? I don't make a dime.

Best movie of all time... Dr Zhivago. It's a terrific historical fiction of the Russian revolution and it's told as a marvelously romantic love story.

I enjoy making short animations like this one:

3. To Kill a Mockingbird.
Reply:1) I'm 34. I started having my doubts somewhere in my early teens when a good friend of mine committed suicide. My "transformation" into Atheism was a slow and gradual process that finished itself somewhere in my early twenties.

2) I retired from being a personal fitness trainer in order to recover from cancer treatments, as well as gain steady employment in order to pay off a mountain of bills. Presently, I push buttons at a plant that tests computer memory modules. The pay? Enough, m'kay?

3) I'm a huge movie fan, so narrowing it all down to one movie is absolutely impossible. Top three? Jaws, First Blood, and Conan the Barbarian. I have my reasons!
Reply:I'm 17, I considered myself a true 'atheist' ohhh...couple years ago. I'd always had the questions in my mind, but dogma kept me too afraid to ask them. No steady job at the moment. More like a freelance artist (makes fair money though). I usually get 50-400$ per job depending on how great a task it is. Favorite movie...Hard to say. Possibly Spirited Away (what can I say, great flick) or...The butterfly effect.

What do you think - Wages fall as immigration grows - Drop in pay greater for Hispanics than others?

As South Carolina's Hispanic population has grown, one measurement of wages for all workers has dropped, a University of South Carolina study released last week found.

While study authors would not attribute all of the drop to immigration, their findings were similar to research done elsewhere.

The S.C. median annual wage, adjusted for inflation, dropped 3.1 percent to $28,039 between 2000 and 2005, a period when the state experienced rapid growth in its Hispanic population. The median is the midpoint at which half of all salaries would be above that figure and half below.

Pay in construction, the dominant field for Hispanics, slipped 5 percent for all S.C. workers during what was a record housing boom. Construction wages for Hispanics fell by more than twice that.

"When an industry is booming like this, you expect to see wages increase, not decline like this," said Doug Woodward, a research economist at the USC Moore School of Business. Woodward wrote the study with Elaine Lacy of the USC Consortium for Latino Immigration Studies.

Woodward said the study supported the notion that Hispanic workers were willing to take less desirable jobs, such as slaughtering chickens or roofing during hot S.C. summers, for lower wages.

"What we're doing here in South Carolina is importing cheap labor to our economy," Woodward said.

However, Woodward did not tie the wage decrease to the Hispanic population, which makes up 3.3 percent of S.C.'s 4.1 million residents. He also cited the state's higher-than-average level of workers who do not have a high school or college diploma.

The report, based on surveys of 503 Hispanics and examination of federal and S.C. population data, is the first comprehensive examination of the state's fastest-growing population. http://www.charlotte.com/280/story/26080...

Wait a minute, I thought they were all here to pick vegetables. Since when are construction and landscaping and poultry processing “jobs Americans won’t do”???? Sure, Americans won’t do them for $5 an hour with no benefits, but all of these jobs used to be filled by Americans making decent wages.

What do you think - Wages fall as immigration grows - Drop in pay greater for Hispanics than others?
Unfortunately, as illegals come here with "cheap" labor....Cheap actually by no means as they are having baby's right and left, getting food stamps and hospital and medical care at the tax payer expense...it defiantly takes away from those that actually have to pay for public benefits thru taxes...Why do you think people are upset?
Reply:less education

people at the bottom feel the hurt first, due to slow in the economy!!!
Reply:processing plants should be making $20 or more an hour. farm workers should be making $10.00 or more an hour. because of the illegals wages will stay down. we can't expect them to care, they have 3 agendas on their list. come here and have kids, take our jobs and money. and take over America. we hear this everyday how they are going to kill off Americans and take OUR country.
Reply:Pretty soon we'll all be working twelve hours a day to earn two onions.
Reply:Sony are you finally seeing the real picture here,LOL? Yes it does drive wages down. For both citizens and non. That's the beauty of slave labor.Poor people are SOOO much easier to control than wealthy or even those who don't have to depend on government benefits.Would you speak out against our government if you depended on them to eat that day?No you wouldn't.We need a majority of poor according to the government. So we import slave labor to drive wages down.Don't hate the players of the game Sony hate the game makers. They are the ones you should be yelling about.
Reply:Of course they drop... and will continue to do so until the illegals are all deported. It is ricidulous the the legal citizens have to take cuts in pay because of them. Many of these illegals are in unions... another slap in the face.
Reply:It isn't brain surgery. Excess labor supply = drop in labor price.
Reply:When you ask a question you should let us answer it. You took my answer word for word.
Reply:Most are not here to pick vegetables. Most are here to get to suck the U.S. Government teat for free food stamps, free housing, free medical care and free education. They will eventually turn the U.S. into another Mexico. And if you have ever been there outside of a swanky resort, you know what I'm talking about. Pissing right in the streets squatting over a pipe.
Reply:Yes. Correct. I couldn't have said it better myself. So I won't.

SURVEY- Would you rather....??

Thanks!

xxx

SURVEY- Would you rather....??
You make that a tough one! Honestly I'd have to pick true love, the only that would bother me from that description is the lots of sexual partners/drinking/smoking. But if that wasn't the case number 2 for sure.
Reply:I think true love may not really be true love. Although since Im a nurse its possible that it just seems I have more in common with 1. So I would choose 1 without a doubt.
Reply:that is hard, cos I'd pick the true love, but in reality I don't think I'd love him if he drunk and smoked.
Reply:1. That sounds just like my boyfriend except for the sex before marriage thingXD

My boyfriend and I saw eachother and knew it was meant to be but I fell more and more in love with him with each day and am now becoming crazy about him. He's incredible. He is going to make great money and works alot but still makes room for me. He doesn't want me to overwork myself but will let me work if I want to (which I do) and he does not drink or smoke (drinks a bit I think).

I think in the end 2. will end up a disaster because a man who gets around is obviously not as in love with you as you are with him.

My man is perfect=D=D=D

I love him so much -- He's my world=D

ps: I guess the number 1. case was true love for me afterall but it still was a love that had to grow over time (it grew pretty quickly though)

I love you honey!!!♥
Reply:The doctor. That way I can not work and while he's gone go find a girlfriend as I am not gay.

5. i still go places, but i try to do all my errands at once. and we've talked about cancelling our summer road trip to see my family. but that's not just because of high gas prices. :-)

6. there is absolutely nothing wrong with eating a cheesesteak, fries, and a chocolate milkshake at 9am if you like that kind of food. i personally can't eat anything before noon. i have my coffee and that's it. i know all about how good breakfast is ... but food in the morning makes me nauseous (not pregnant--unless i've been having morning sickness for 8 1/2 years straight).

2. Never. I love my partner. We've given up a lot for eachother. I'll always choose love over money!

3. Oh my god, I cannot imagine eating that much! It would have to be a huge amount before I could even consider that. Just the question makes mefeel sick!

4. I would be bothered if all men disappeared! First, I would lose my partner and I couldn't handle that! Second, men are useful!

5. I limit my driving a lot!

6. It's unhealthy! Breakfast is an important meal and you need to eat something that gives you energy, not something that weighs you down.

Cash flows?

Several salary surveys indicate that accountants who hold the Certified Public Accountant designations earn on the average $9000 more than their noncertified counterparts. If this certification raises your average salary by $ 9000 over 40-year working life and money costs you 8 percent, how much is this certification worth today ? (Assume year-end cash flows).

A little survey for the ladies. I heard this a while back. : )?

You are in a club. And every guy is wearing a t-shirt which tells the guys annual salary and how big they are. Here are a few of the guys:

$30,000 - 9" and thick

$60,000 - 6" and average girth

$100,000 - 4" and less than average girth

$250,000 - 3" or less....very skinny.

Which do you talk to? Imagine they all are of equal looks. This is of course a theorhetical question.

A little survey for the ladies. I heard this a while back. : )?
$60,000 with 6 inches b/c not only is he average size and I happen to like that he makes a decent paycheck, I also am a professional and both of us would be living well and having delicious sex...
Reply:I totally agree with NappyNap on this one. It isn't the size of the boat, it's the motion in the ocean.

Plus $60,000 is a decent salary. In today's world the female usually works out of the house so together as a couple you will be making good money.
Reply:LOL! I like this one. I'd go with the 60,000 and the average size.
Reply:60,000 w/ whipped cream and cherrie on top....mmmhmm good!
Reply:60000. def... money n sex are equally important i need a guy who has the whole package.. the shirts also should include their sense of humor which is important too i cant be with a boring lame guy
Reply:Nice question. I'd choose 60,000 with the average girth and 6"
Reply:u didn't but a,b,or c. but i would have to choose 60'000-6" because i've known large salaries and large penises and from my experience, men who have large penises usually aren't good lovers because they feel they don't have to be, they think that their penis will do all the work for them.

My yearly review is due in a month and I want to prepare in terms of a payrise..?

My employer has told me I will be promoted to a Senior member of the Administration team and that I will receive a payrise. I am currently on $40,000 per annum, but have been working in admin for five years. Our own salary survey suggests I should be getting paid between $40,000-$50,000, plus I have seen several jobs which are easier then mine at around $50,000. Am I better off looking for employment elsewhere or asking for a $10k payrise. I know my boss values me highly as we have discussed me leaving previously and this is when he told me I would be promoted and given a payrise at my review. Is it really unprofessional to ask for so much money? Also, a girl that works under me, continually asks for payrises and has gone up $8k over the last year. I have not ever asked for one yet.

My yearly review is due in a month and I want to prepare in terms of a payrise..?
There is nothing wrong or unprofessional in asking for a hike which is proportionate to your expertise and knowledge !!
Reply:So you don't value yourself as a highly professional who doesn't deserve a pay raise? Of course, it isn't unprofessional to ask for more money. Learning to negotiate means producing a win/win situation for you and your employer. If you aren't happy, the job suffers, and so does the employer because he has to pay to retrain when you quit. Its never hurts to go in with a high number and if he is smart he will "negotiate" and then you can at least meet the number you really intended to be happy with. So, always go high, and then when he squirms a bit, start the negotiation toward the pay raise you really want.
Reply:If you have not already, start putting together the portfolio of what you have done, excelled at, and gone above and beyond for in your job. Once you have that put together, it is going to be much easier to build a case for a pay raise.

Also, confirm that the salary in your area is indeed in the range you believe it to be. www.salary.com.

Lastly, don't compare yourself to others who you work with who have "easier" jobs. If you are sharing salary information with others, that could be a red flag for your employer as that is confidential information. That one could backfire if you use it.

Bottom line, it's not that you do or do not ask, but how you frame the question.

Question about Carpenter salary?

My school has a 1-yr wood technics program. After every class they send out surveys to the new grads to find out how much they are making. I was looking at it, and the range was $1100 on the low ind to $9300 on the high end!

What accounts for such a discrepancy in salaries? Who would be making so much with only a one yr diploma? Do certian carpentery positions pay more?

Thanks for any information!

Question about Carpenter salary?
I know if you join the Union they can pay alot of money it depends on the State but some of the Union jobs pay $50 an hour, if you work for a contractor you may not make that much.

Journeyman make the most and if you coma right out of school you have training and you can try and get Journeyman status. I believe the top paying carpenter in Kansas would be around $40 an hour but you have to be there awhile thats not a starting wage.

Hope this helped
Reply:The more experience you have, the more construction companies want you, the more money you earn. Also, the low end may be teenage workers who don't necessarily work full time, so they earn less

Is 15 an hour too much to ask for?

I've been with this company for 4 years now and when I started I was doing freelance for a national company making 15 an hour right out of college. When I started I asked for 15 they offered 10 I took it b/c I wanted full time. Well now 4 years later and after a move "up" to the creative department I'm only making 13.50. At my review they offered to bump me up to 14.50 I countered with 15 even. I really don't think that's too much to ask for do you? The national average for an entry level graphic designer according to the 2006 AIGA salary survey is 33,000, so 15 an hour isn't even close to that. Plus I don't think I'm entry level anymore. Am I?

What to do? Keep pushing and look for a new job?

or settle for 14.75?

Is 15 an hour too much to ask for?
Depends on where you are. A national average is just a starting place. You gotta find out what the local markets are paying. You also have to weigh that against whether or not you have a large employer with lots of assets, or a mom %26amp; pop operation. The mom %26amp; pop won't be able to afford as much as the corp. Also, look at your benefits. Do you have a fairly flexible schedule or are you checked by punching in and out on the minute? Is the employer understanding or not? Do you have health insurance, and a 401k? Instead of raising your hourly rate, would they be more amenable to contributing a certain percentage of your contribution to a retirement fund? Would you hate yourself after moving to a new job? Are you leaving lifelong friends behind?

It's more than just the $--it's all the intangibles you have to take into consideration.

Good luck.
Reply:How much does it mean to you to not get $10 a week? Do the 14.50, tell them do that, and do it now, but you want 15. That is a dollar and is full time? What about the benefit package? 401K? Profit sharing. There are other hidden bennies that could make the difference. Stubborn for $20 doesn't cut it. Moving job will be a pain. Do you like the people? Apparently. The first jewish rule of business, Get the Money!
Reply:I say take the 14.75, and do some REALLY good work, and maybe you can ask for 15 at the next review.

Or they could kick you out. Do you want to take that chance?
Reply:33,000/yr is 15.87 / hr, so $15/hr is close to that
Reply:Tough question...I guess it depends on how badly you need this job and what the job prospects are like for your field in your area.

I don't think $15/hour is too much to ask after 4 years, and you would NOT be considered entry level any longer...

Sorry I can't be more definitive. It really is a personal/financial decision you'll have to make, but I wish you good luck!

How do you make sure you get a good job right after college?

I guess I need to tell you a bit about me so we can narrow this down.

I will graduate this fall with a B.S. in psychology from Illinois tech. I have relevant work experience in survey data and stats for some big name companies.

I also managed computer labs and other employees. I worked on a project for Calamos investments and I'm currently interning at a multicultural marketing agency in downtown Chicago. Lastly, I'm bilingual.

I really don't know how much a person with my skills is worth. Salary.com makes the amounts fluctuate way too much. I have tried to network but I haven't made any relevant connections. My resume is up on monster and career builder. I had a couple of job offers in which they wanted me to drop out from school and work for them full time. I turned them down.

Any suggestions on what else I could do? This is really frightening to me. My friend graduated 6 months ago in business and he is working at the mall for 6.50 an hour.

How do you make sure you get a good job right after college?
It's all about networking.People land a job not because of their credentials (or not exactly because of them) but rather because they have a network of friends and acquantainces here and there. Talk to everyone you know, let them know you're in search of a career opportunity. One day the phone will rind, one of those friends would have heard of some opportunity somewhere that he believes is ideal for you...
Reply:First, get the right degree.

Second, go to the right college.

Third, make good grades.

Since it's too late to address these, check with the college placement office. Do they conduct any job fares?
Reply:i thought a person like u, with that much of experience in hand would likely to get a good offer

ill begin my 2nd year this fall. keeping gpa up is one thing, gettin experience is another thing. and getting a job after that will be another thing.

whatever, for me, i just let destiny leads.
Reply:A word of advice: don't worry....with your experience and qualifications, job offers will come. Take whatever that comes first to gain further experience. It will do wonders to your CV. If it is not your ideal job, look for another. Someday, you'll land into a good one.
Reply:You are one, out many others who will be graduating in near future, with some what better degree, better institute, may with better grades too.

In short, we are currently living in a highly competitive era.

With your existing experience and graduation in psychology and knowledge of two languages, you better explore possibility of

finding job in 'Hospitality and Tourism' industry in HRM/HRD as recruiter or trainer. You may add few specialization, while working and grow as expert.

do attend campus interview or Job fare organized in your collage.

Full Truck load of Good Luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why are chemical engineers so well-paid?

NACE Research: Top-Paid Majors For 2007-08 Graduates

In spite of recent news about an economic slowdown, the Winter 2008 Salary Survey provides an early indication that the positive hiring projections employers offered in the Job Outlook 2008 report will indeed be characteristic of the job market for 2008 graduates. The Winter issue is the first salary report for the Class of 2008

Following are the top-paid majors for 2007-08 graduates, according to NACE's Winter 2008 Salary Survey:

Curriculum Average Salary Offer

Chemical Engineering $63,749

Computer Science $58,377

Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering $58,249

Electrical/Electronics %26amp; Communications Engineering $56,512

Mechanical Engineering $56,429

Finance $48,795

Accounting $47,413

Logistics/Materials Management $45,577

Business Administration/Management $43,823

Why are chemical engineers so well-paid?
Economics 101 - Supply and Demand!
Reply:I think it's because chemical engineering majors usually go into very high-tech, difficult jobs (it's literally rocket science!). And so their employers have to pay them well because the jobs require a lot of both knowledge and effort.

Why do females expect to earn less?

I just read an article on Yahoo! Finance's "Experts" page that summarized findings of a recent survey of American teenagers. One point was that the "gender gap" is thriving. Teenage males expect to earn upwards of $174,000, while teenage females expect to earn less than $114,000 a year. Two thirds of the teens (both genders) also said that they believe women generally earn less than men.

I disagree with the author about the root of these findings. I don't think that young women expect or believe they'll earn less than young men if they take the same jobs and work just as hard. I think that women are (unconsciously perhaps) less ambitious than young men. Women don't seem to expect or plan to spend much time in the workforce, to support a family, or even to support their own desired lifestyles--and their salary expectations reflect that. Which may be why many of my smart, female, finance-major friends took low paying jobs in HR and event planning.

What do you think?

Why do females expect to earn less?
There are three factors, I think:

(1) Women tend to take more time off from their careers to raise a family than men do. This knocks them off of the career track and puts them behind men of the same age.

(2) Women tend to get college degrees that are less lucrative than the degrees men get (this isn't a universal truth, just a general trend).

(3) Companies will favor young men over young women for a long-term position because they assume the woman is going to take time off for a family (even if she actually has no interest in doing so). It's a gender stereotype and isn't fair to the individual, but there it is.

The fact is that more women take maternity leave than men who take paternity leave, so this *is* evidence -- not conclusive proof, but evidence -- that women are less ambitious in their careers. That's a general statement and there are obviously exceptions -- some women are going to be far more ambitious than most men. But in general, men are still more career oriented and therefore expect -- and receive -- higher salaries.
Reply:1) I expect to earn less because I plan on only working very part time after my baby is born (of course I think the value of being able to care for my child is worth much more than money).

2) Stats show women today do earn less than their male counterparts doing the same work. There is definitely an element of women not wanting to be as confrontational as men, and so many could earn just as much if they just bucked up and asked for the raise (even if it means being a little confrontational). Up to this point in my career, I have made it a point to ask for raises to try to overcome this, but I admit, it's been difficult for me to do.
Reply:We are not less ambitous but through time most of us want children and stuff, i wouldn't expect to earn less than a man in the same job i would be expecting the same, I earn more than my partner although only a few thousand a year it is still more. Girls still think of their mothers staying at home perhaps, but the world is changing and women are becoming more career driven so hopefully women will become more confident is speaking up about what they should earning

7) Yes, I have one now. Bought my first one at 17 so I could work.

8) Probably early 30s. Should have an apartment before then.

9) Yes, I hope to someday. Either mid 20's, late 20's. Early 30's if it goes that way.

10) I don't know. It depends on how whoever I marry feels. One or two, probably.

11) I'll probably be in my mid 40's, early 50's.

12) I don't know what will be considered 'retirement' then. Maybe 5 or 10.

13) 55? 60? 65? not sure. Depends.

14) I can't answer this.
Reply:I've never had expectations, so I what I have now is what I expected.

1. I had my first real job (not student job) at the age of 22.

2. I get now the minimum wage, roughly $300.

3. I never had any, and I only expect as much to keep up with the minimum wage.

4. There is no such thing in my country. But we have to pay pension and health care, at the moment that costs for me roughly $45.

5. Since it's minimum wage, it's tax-free.

6. I spend nowadays around $115-140.

7. No.

8. I don't plan buying a house. It costs too much. I'll live in a sublet.

9. Since my girlfriend insists on it... We want to do it as soon as possible.

10. We don't plan it. If it happens accidentally, it's ok.

11. I guess around 45-55.

12. Currently here men can retire at the age of 63, so around 10.

13. Should I live that age, by that time I'm sure it'll be raised to 70, if not suspended.

14. Life expectancy is 68 years here for men, so I guess even in the future I'll only have 5 years to live.

Ouch, that hurt. :)

Gender Gap in the Computer Field: Women's Paychecks Still Lag Men's?

The gender gap in compensation remains striking, according to "Computerworld’s" 20th annual Salary Survey. If not corrected, the pay disparity between male and female IT workers could cause women to leave the field in droves, says Gartner Inc. analyst Diane Morello, an IT career expert.

What was the gap in wages? Across the board, total IT compensation averaged $91,464 for men and $80,781 for women. Those figures are similar to those from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which reported that in 2005, women’s usual median weekly earnings were 81% of men’s.

Why is this important to both men and women? If these stereotypes aren’t eliminated, Morello cautions that 40% of women will leave the IT workforce by 2012. And if that happens, she says, suddenly “your IT skills crisis is 50% worse than you think.”

Why are companies paying IT women professionals less when there's a growing shortage of IT workers? Just because they can get away with it?

Gender Gap in the Computer Field: Women's Paychecks Still Lag Men's?
I am a woman. I work in IT. I know it happens. It pisses me off. If I ever find out and get proof it's near me, I'll explode. Not even speaking what kind of "rewards" this sector gives women that are not paid on one's bank account. Just look at some of you guys responding.

They can get away with it, because nobody in my country knows what exactly his/her coworker is making. I demand complete openness about that in this sector. That won't improve anything, but I bet it'll take less years than 2012. And don't tell me you have no insight if someone works for the same company 5 years, same function, same hours, etc. You can pretty much take a guess if someone is 'better' or 'knows more' than you - providing you are honest about it. Admitting someone is better at something, is something I'd rather attribute for women to have the honesty to themselves than men. You can also guess you should not be making the salary of function x, role y if your function includes roles y AND z.

@happy_bullet: Where's your home address? I want to come by and "talk".

@paul_C: That's because the time efficiency you win is by letting the women in your department take care of the shitty jobs and play secretary for you boys. Not with me :P
Reply:There was recently an article on yahoo discussing gender gap pay issues. The main issue they were studying was that women rarely asked for more pay/bonuses/promotions in recognition of their work. Men were more likely to be agressive in that nature.

So yes, companies can just get away with it. Why pay someone more if they don't ask for more and are willing to stay for the company and work.

Ultimately, male or female, if you don't like your salary. Ask for more (be prepared to list your accomplishments). If you don't receive more, find another job if you truly believe you are worth more.
Reply:I'm almost afraid to challenge this here - typically when you don't agree with the crowd ion YA you get 'thumbed.' Please give me a serious read first.

When I hear these reports I wonder about the amount of time each person has spent in the work force. i don't see in this article or others I have seen whether they have tried ton make adjustments for time-in-service (and the effect of service breaks).

America never has paid people equally for the same job - even among men there is often a 20% disparity for the same job. A guy who advanced quickly to mid-mgt will make less than a guy who took 5-6 yrs longer to get there - because most companies opay for time in service more than for the job itself. So 5-6 yrs different time in service is about 20% pay discrepancy.

I agree with the principal of equal pay for equal work - but if two people are doing parallel jobs in a company and one person has 20 yrs and the other has 15 yrs, nobody expects them to get equal pay, do they?

I just would like to see these studies' data analysed deeper than the media soundbyte 'average vs average'. Ok, you can attack now.
Reply:Its because no matter how much schooling women have, they are forever having to be shown the new ways of time-saving, effective techniques. They simply aren't problem-solvers. They are more 'by-the-book' when it comes to processes.

They are conscientious and thorough, but not innovative, which requires taking risks.
Reply:Are the numbers broken down in such a way as to account for things like education and years of experience? Most women come up short on the salary scale due to having taken years off from full-time employment for maternal duties.
Reply:let's back the truck up....it's a survey, not cold hard facts from the irs, ok. second, as said before, as genome mapping, women lack the "driving" gene %26amp; are the worst drivers. this leads them to getting late to work everyday. hope this helps

X-)
Reply:Are they comparing for hours worked?

EDIT: Ok, I read the article, and I can't sort out if they compared hours worked or not. However, they were referring to the highest level positions, so I would assume they're on salary and not hourly. That IS a problem, then.

My mom is in computer science, and she really had to fight her way to the top. Several companies she interviewed at in the early 80's were still saying, "We don't hire women". UGH! She quickly chose to turn to consulting in response, and ended up with much better pay. As her good reputation spread, desperate companies were able to "look past" the extra X chromosome and hired her on projects anyways. We ladies apparently still have a long way to go, which is disappointing to me.

EDIT: I should note that she works with the local junior high school in a summer school project to get girls interested in math and science, and they are clearly just as innovative and bright as the boys. Perhaps there are less women, statistically, that have an aptitude for these things, but there are still MANY who do.
