Does anyone have experience or knowledge of salary surveys. Want 2 find how my salary compares 2 others?
what type of job do you have?

Survey: How do you determine what your "Salary Requirements" are when applying for a new job?

You need to know what this number is before you even apply but I don't recommend writing it down anywhere (on their paper or form). I say you need to know because at some point someone will ask you and there becomes an awful silence in the interview when they do.

My advice will be to give a range. A low number is the minimum you will take this job for...which might be the least you would take and still be comfortable living as you do now. You know what you make now so that is a starting point. But don't give this low number out ever.

Next come up with what you think is market value for this job. What do you think the best one who is doing it is getting for your area. Average those two numbers together and make that your low number. You high number is the top end.

Finally, use weasel phrases like "I'm looking at something between X and Y but I usually take benefits into account" ... or ... "I'm looking for something in this range (x-y) but I'm taking into account the position, hours, duties or responsibilities"

Reply:Write "Open", you do not want to short change yourself nor do you want to be passed by because they may not be willing to offer you want "you're expecting". During the interview you can discuss it better.

Good luck on the job hunting!

Is my employer allowed to Deny the Cost of Living if my salary is Red Circled?

During our Market Salary/ Job Equity survey, our CAO has decided that he will withhold COLA increments and any negotiated increments if a position is outside of the identified salary range.

Is there any legal position with regards to denying COLA?

We have no agreement to do such.

Is my employer allowed to Deny the Cost of Living if my salary is Red Circled?
Nope. Company policy on cost of living would only be subject to government interfernce if you are a union member, and maybe not even then.

How should I proceed with salary negotiation in this situation?

I interviewed for a Research Associate position at the a survey research facility on Friday and they offered me the position on Monday. I pretty sure I was their top candidate. The interview went very well (the whole process lasted about 5 hours). The presentation I gave was well received (it based on survey research results from a project I worked on several years ago). Most of what they do at the is descriptive in nature, so I think the results I presented, which included inferential statistical analysis (e.g. logistic regression), demonstrated that I could do what they were needing and more.

Now, here are the issues. On March 15th (after I saw the job posting but before I applied), I called the Director and asked him what the salary range was for the position. He said in the high 30's to low 40's. I interpret that as about 38-42K. Now, when I got the job offer on April 16th, he offered me just under 35k. When I got my first salaried position, back in 1998, I needed a job pretty badly and did not negotiate salary (the position actually required a graduate degree, but they gave me a shot and I did well). I'm a bit older and smarter now so I told the Director that I would like to meet with him and ask him some more questions. I was actually disappointed that they were low-balling the offer and got off the phone with a bad taste in my mouth. I was actually hoping that I would qualify for the upper end of the range (i.e. about 42K) since I was very well qualified for the position and seemed to be their top applicant.

At first I think I took the lower offer personally and felt a bit defensive. I gave the issue some thought, did some research and talked to one other person that I trust. My conclusion was that getting a lower offer is pretty much standard and that I should definitely negotiate the salary. I would like to start at 42K, but I am open to starting at 40K and having an incentive in my contract for a 5% increase if I do well the first 90 or 180 days. What figure should I start with when I negotiate to get to my goal? I don't want them to rescind the offer, but I want to get paid what I'm worth too. I've done my homework. I've looked up the salaries for survey researchers nationally and in Illinois and have a number of other points to strengthen my case for a higher salary when I meet with the Director.

What further complicates matters is that the Director is retiring on June 30th and a newly hired Associate Director (she starts May 1st) will probably be the interim Director until they bring someone else in. I really like the current Director's description of his management style, his demeanor, and his flexibility.

What are your thoughts about all this? I would appreciate any input you can give me. Take care.

How should I proceed with salary negotiation in this situation?
You're going to have to put this job on the line if you want more money. You have to be willing to walk away from it and continue your search. If you are not willing to take the risk, take the low ball number. If you are willing to take the risk, tell them that you were told that the job would pay between 35K and 45K and that you are worth at least 40K. To offer you the low ball number is to say that you barely qualify for the job. You are better than that, and you know it. It's all up to you. good luck

Do companies typically release salary comparables?

I am told my company does salary surveys to make sure our salary grades are in line with industry standards and across our own company. Do companies typically release this information to their own employees?

Do companies typically release salary comparables?
Not normally, salary surveys are to get good reliable information on "bench mark" jobs.
Reply:They might and not make it very known as to how to get it, but if you want good, solid salary info, go to www.acinet.org. You can get state reports, and even some metropolitan area reports.

What is the average salary for an equity analyst in USA with 6months -2 years experience?
The CFA Institute does a compensation survey every couple of years. To avoid skewing, they do not compute the average, but report the median and the 90th percenitle. The 2005 survey shows that median salary for an investment professional with less than five years of experience is $85,000, with a $15,000 median bonus. The 90th percentile of total compensation for investment professionals with less than five years of experience is $252,500.

I need a salary survey for electronic engineers with 10 years experience+ broken down into 5 year increments.?

If you provide a geographic area, this website can give you an excellent bell-curve for various professions. You'd have to extrapolate the effect of experience though (i.e. less experience would tend towards the left). The site only accounts for experience in terms of a change in job title ("senior engineer" vs. "engineer" for example).

Our son is up to $35hr as he just turned out as a sheet metal union journeyman, same area.

Of course, once you add in benefits, my union is much better than his with 7:0 holidays, 6:0 sick days, 3:0 weeks paid vacation. We both have good paid medical and dental insurance, and so far a pension plan.

the salary i have been offered is way below the range that the several salary survey sites have suggested. Can i use the survey sites as leverage to negotiate a higher salary?|||You can try - but you always need to be cautious when negotiating. And remember - it varies a LOT on location. (Talk to a temp agency to get a solid feel for what you should be earning.)

Also, it varies if you have special skills, a long work history, etc.

If you can show a company what you bring to them, that will help!

Best of luck!
